Michiko W.

In 1985, I moved to the United States, where I was profoundly struck by the bold energy of New York's Abstract Expressionist movement.

During my 14 years in New York, I immersed myself in the city's vibrant art scene, frequenting museums and galleries that nurtured my creative spirit. After raising my children, I returned to New York in 2013 and, by chance, discovered Joanne Mattera’s book in an art supply store. This introduction to encaustic painting, beginning with Deborah Winiarski's encaustic workshop at the Art Students League (ASL), led me to study under both Winiarski and Bruce Dorfman—marking the true beginning of my artistic journey.

Back in Japan, I became deeply engaged in restoring rivers and abandoned orchards in my favorite coastal town, Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture. The unexpectedly intense roadwork required for these projects led me to temporarily step away from my art. However, a return visit to New York in 2024 reignited my passion, and now I divide my time between Japan and the United States. In Japan, I cultivate a reclaimed orchard in Oiso, growing citrus and tea trees, while in New York, I devote myself fully to my artistic practice.

My work is rooted in the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, a philosophy that also shapes my life—embracing imperfection, transience, and beauty through abstract forms.
